Some cat historians are of the belief that Persians brought to Italy were crossed with those from Turkey. This specimen arrived in England in the early 19th Century. Angoras and Persians were also crossed to produce that perfect and desirable coat. The British undertook an extensive breeding program to establish a range of colors and to improve the quality of the fur. Today, Britain is considered the 'home' of Long-haired cat breeds. They were brought to the United States in the 1930's and today we find a wide selection of colors here. Whilst their ancestry may be shrouded in mystery, it is no secret that they are one of the most famous of all the cat breeds They are classified as long-haired cat breeds. Their distinctive long-haired fur can be found in many colors and patterns. Solid colors, Bi-colors, Smoke and Shaded, Tortoiseshells (aka Calico) and Tabby. Probably the most distinguishing feature is the very cute flat face (pansy-face). Over time and as a result of breeding the flattened face has become more prominent. Coupled to this adorable face are the large, round and wide-open eyes. Their eye-color can range from green to blue to gold and copper.
These cats are a peaceful, gentle and non-aggressive breed and make the most wonderful companions for adults and children alike. Generally this breed takes time to warm to strangers and prefers a tranquil environment. They don't mind their own company but also remain affectionate, lazy lap cats. The beauty of this cat is that it adapts well to apartment living which makes it an ideal pet for singles or couples.
